It’s April, and after a long, wet winter, we were more than ready for a new adventure. We decided to tackle the Trans Portugal Route, a 700-mile off-road journey that runs north to south (or vice versa) along the Spain-Portugal border, stretching across the Algarve and ending at Zambujeira. With our trusty Land Rover Defender overlander packed and prepped, we set off to explore Portugal’s hidden off-road treasures—rocky mountains, tranquil river valleys, vibrant cork forests, and scenic coastal outcrops.
For 11 days, we experienced the true freedom of wild camping. Setting up camp in the most stunning and secluded locations—from mountaintop views that stretched endlessly to quiet coastal cliffs where the ocean stretched beyond the horizon. At times, we camped near wildflower meadows, and at others, we nestled into forest clearings or beside tranquil riverbanks. This freedom to stop and enjoy the landscape as we pleased is what makes wild camping in Portugal so special.
Every stop felt like a new discovery. Our provisions were sourced from local markets, where fresh produce was abundant, and water was easily accessible from village springs, allowing us to stay off-grid without stress. The Portuguese countryside provided the perfect balance between accessibility and wildness.
One of our favourite parts was wild swimming in hidden gorges, an experience made even better by the peacefulness of the natural surroundings. Driving through Portugal’s vast cork forests, the largest in the world, was another highlight. These beautiful forests are intersected by well-maintained gravel tracks, which made for smooth, enjoyable driving. Every day brought something new—a new vista, a new landscape, a new memory.
1. Stock Up Locally:
Local markets are your best friend. They provide fresh provisions, and you’ll find that the food in Portugal is both excellent and affordable. Plus, you can refill your water from natural springs in nearly every village. These little conveniences make a big difference when wild camping.
2. Scenic Drives are Everywhere:
Some of our favourite drives were through the steep, vine-covered slopes of the Douro Valley and around the inland lakes. The scenery is stunning, and the roads are well-kept, making it a pleasure to navigate.
3. Embrace Wild Swimming:
Portugal’s remote gorges and rivers offer some of the best wild swimming spots. Nothing beats the feeling of cooling off in a crystal-clear river surrounded by cliffs and wildflowers.
4. Explore the Cork Forests:
Portugal is home to the largest cork forests in the world, and these are a joy to drive through. With wide gravel tracks cutting through the trees, it’s a serene and unique experience. These forests are not only beautiful but also very accessible by campervan.
Portugal is a paradise for wild camping enthusiasts. In certain areas, wild camping is permitted, offering an authentic way to experience the country’s untouched beauty. While some of the more rugged off-road tracks are best suited for 4×4 vehicles, there are countless gravel roads and scenic routes that are perfect for campervans. Whether you’re setting up camp in the mountains, near a peaceful river valley, or on a coastal outcrop with stunning ocean views, Portugal provides endless opportunities for unforgettable wild camping experiences.
The Trans Portugal Route ends at Zambujeira on the west coast, where we found our first proper campsite after days of wild camping. Here, we caught up on some laundry, gave our Land Rover some well-deserved care, and recharged ourselves before setting off again. Afterward, we returned to wild camping, following sandy coastal tracks up towards Lisbon and then heading inland through central Portugal. Even at the end of our journey, the adventure didn’t stop, and we continued to uncover new places.
If our journey has inspired you to try wild camping in Portugal, hiring a campervan is one of the best ways to experience the country. With a campervan, you have the freedom to travel at your own pace, explore the hidden trails, and stop wherever the scenery captures your imagination.
Waveney Campers offers fully equipped VW campervans with solar panels, Webasto diesel heating, a fridge, stove, water tank, and more—everything you need for a comfortable and stress-free adventure. They even provide thoughtful extras like outdoor chairs and bike racks at no extra cost. Portugal is a safe, friendly, and accessible country, making it the perfect destination for anyone looking to embrace the freedom of the open road. If you’re planning your next adventure, we highly recommend hiring a campervan and putting Portugal at the top of your list. You won’t be disappointed—our adventure was a 10 out of 10, and we’re already planning to return next year to explore more of the wild west coast!
