Bridgetown

We left Albany to start slowly making our way back to Perth which will be our final destination. By chance we passed through Bridgetown and just really liked the look of it. It’s situated on the River Blackwood in the heart of the Blackwood River Valley about 3 hours south of Perth. It is the only heritage listed town in the south west and so has many fine old period buildings which is probably what attracted us to it as we drove through. We found a campsite just a few minutes walk from town and got a pitch with a great view looking down onto the river and decided to stay for the weekend. On Friday we walked down the riverbank into town for a few provisions and of course a visit to the visitor centre. They fixed us up with a good walk to do which we did in the afternoon after we’d had lunch on the verandah of the local hotel.

We noticed that on the Saturday it was the annual Bridgetown Agricultural Show. Having an agricultural background ourselves we decided to go along for the day and what a treat. We do find that the shows in the UK seem to lean more towards selling double glazing and spa baths and less to do with agriculture of late but this one really was just as an agricultural show should be. It seemed as though the whole town had turned out and there was a really friendly atmosphere. Because the town is in a large forestry area one of the main competetive events was log chopping and another was sheaf tossing. And of course as well as all the animals and farm machinery there was the produce show, everything being judged from home grown lemons and avocados to cakes and jam making. Sheep and alpacas were being sheared and their wool spun by local women. There was a small funfair and the day finished off with a firework display.

An early morning planned for Sunday for the twice monthly Sunday Market.
