Maude to Mildura

We start the day with a swim at a picnic area called Sandy Point on the Murrumbidgee River that runs through Hay. Free camping right on the river would have been great but it was just too hot last night. We head out towards Maude, a small town with a population of just 60 which as well as having one tiny store has a lovely old wooden bridge to cross before joining the Stuart Highway and a fairly  long slog to Mildura. We camp at the side of the great Murray River with a cooling swim thrown in.

We have to cross the border into South Australia and as is usual we have to give up all our fruit and veg. This is to stop the spread of fruit fly between states. Although we openly showed them a pack of unopened tomatoes we were told that this could have cost us a $300 fine had we not been tourists from abroad. We stopped at the next town to replenish our fruit and veg only to find 50kms down the road that our next destination meant we had to cross the border again. Aaah!!  Some good map reading a a hefty detour got us round the problem but it would probably have been cheaper to throw it out again.
