Flinders Ranges and Quorn

We arrived at Quorn late afternoon. It’s a lovely looking town and the scenery driving up from Port Augusta was just great (they’re the first hills we’ve seen in a long time). We checked in at Quorn Town Campsite which is an eco site. We never really worked out what that means but they generally charge an extra couple of dollars and you have to recycle your rubbish. It is, however, a lovely site, an oasis of gum trees with a great variety of birds i.e. galahs, green parrots and budgies. The toilet block and camp kitchen are also excellent.

Later we were joined by an Australian couple who were travelling in a campervan similar to ours and they told us that they had shipped their van to the UK a few years ago. They toured extensively around the UK and Europe and then shipped it back to Australia again. Not such a bad idea if you think about it.

The next day we had an early start and drove to Dutchmen’s Stern Conservation Park about 20km on an unmade road. There we did a well marked 11km walk. The first 2 hours of the walk to the summit was very steep but the views were fantastic. There was a visitors book at the top sealed in a container. The last comment before ours said ‘If you’re reading this you must be mad’. Someone must have found the climb difficult! The route down was a gentler slope around the back of Dutchmen’s Stern to form a circular route. It took us 4 hours to complete and we really enjoyed it. There are many others in the area but this was recommended to us as one of the best.

We next drove a further 20km to Warren Gorge for lunch and then a further 60km mainly on unsealed roads with fantastic scenery crossing several dry creaks and one not so dry finally arriving at Wilpena Pound in the Flinders National Park.

Tomorrow we’ll start exploring.
