The Road to Esperance

Today was our first long road journey as we headed for Esperance. It’s about 800 km so we stopped on the way at Mount Barker a little short of Albany where we had planned to stay. Tiredness was getting to us and we can only put it down to a bit of jet lag. Initially we passed through some of the lovely places we called at last year, particularly Bridgetown which is one of our favourites.

The next day we carried on to Esperance. It’s one long straight coastal road and the couple of towns we passed through are small to say the least. Indeed the place called Fitzgerald had a large sign on the road and mile later another sign as you were leaving but we didn’t actually see anything inbetween. Traffic as usual was just the occasional car or road train. It’s a long but enjoyable drive with great scenery. The countryside changed from the grass cattle region around Albany to huge wheat fields. Grain is what this area is famous for and apparently American investors came here many years ago and it’s now a huge, very prosperous farming area. Strangely, although it’s only late spring here it’s fully into harvest time so it’s all combines and straw bales in the fields. There are so many places we’d like to stop off and see along the way but they are huge areas covering a 100 miles or so of coastline and we can’t do everything.

Esperance is known as the Bay of Isles, because an archipeligo of several hundred islands stands just off the coast. It has some unbelievably beautiful beaches of white sand with turquoise sea very reminiscent of the Caribbean. We found a good campsite, as usual overlooking the sea. Tomorrow we’ll spend the day checking out the town.
