Wilpena Pound

Wilpena Pound is a magnificent natural ampitheatre and is the centre piece of the Flinders Ranges National Park. The pound covers about 80 sq km and is ringed by steep ridges only accessible through a narrow gorge at the Wilpena Pound Resort. On the outside the cliffs soar 500m high while on the inside the basin slopes gently away from the peaks. It makes a great tourist centre with an excellent wooded camping area, restaurant, bar and shopping and info centre.

As well as very well marked walks inside the pound there are 4wd excursions and flights over the rim (very exciting). We chose a walk inside the pound to Old Hill Homestead and Wangarra Lookout and then walked on a few more kilometres before walking back to our van at the tourist centre. We then drove out to the lovely Dingly Dell Camping Ground, one of the several bush campsites within the national park that have a bush toilet but no other facilities. Quite where the name Dingly Dell comes from we don’t know but the Aussies seem to have a good imagination for place names.
