Broken Down in Broken Hill

The first part of our journey to Broken Hill went well and we had an overnight stop at Burra, a pretty old mining town with a campsite. The next day all was well til we stopped at a roadhouse for lunch and Geoffrey wouldn’t start. Fortunately we got a jumpstart from a guy at the roadhouse. By the time we arrived at Broken Hill we were on our last legs. We booked in at the first campsite we came across and phoned the RAA. They attended very quickly and confirmed that it was the alternator that was the problem and ordered a replacement that had to come from Sydney on an overnight carrier.

The RAA gave us excellent service, supplying us with a nearly new ‘ute’ to cruise around Broken Hill in – we now feel like true Aussies – and also paid for our 2 nights stay on the campsite.

We spent a few days around Broken Hill last year so we’d visited most of the local attractions. We spent most of the first day getting our internet connection sorted and after 3 visits to the Telstra shop we had success.

Broken Hill is an outback town and is quite large considering how remote it is. In the early part of the 19th century is was a very wealthy ore mining town and has quite a history. The main street has great architechture from the period and it is also home to the Royal Flying Doctor Service which we visited last year. All homesteads had a medical chest with a chart of the body and each medicine numbered to match. When they radioed in with a problem they could be told easily which medicine to use for their problem. Today it is a very slick, hi-tech operation still giving a great service to the residents of the outback and is all run on a charitable basis.

There was, however, one thing we were unable to do last year, so tomorrow we will go back to school and we have to be up early for assembly.
