Inskip Peninsula

Inskip was last place we visited last year. It’s a great camping spot so we decided to return this year. The Inskip Peninsula is a part of the Great Sandy national Park that covers some 56,600 hectares. It is an important area which has spectacular dunes and sand masses that have built up over the last 500,000 years. It’s open heath plains are splashed with colourful wild flowers and has wooodlands of banksias and scribbly gum trees.

The actual Inskip Peninsula is about 20kms long with sea and beach at both sides and trees and bush in the middle. Towards the end it’sonly about 100 metres wide and at the very end the unique small ferry that runs to the world heritage site of Fraser Island comes in. It’s unique that it just drops its ramp onto the beach and the few vehicles disembark (4wd only) and the same at the other end. The end of Fraser Island runs parallel to Inskip Peninsula and so leaves a narrow well protected channel ideal for swimming, fishing etc. There are great camping spots all along the peninsula, all state controlled at a cost of $5 per night per person. The only facilities are very basic bush toilets.

So, with great camping, swimming etc. and the pretty resort of Rainbow Beach only 14 kms away and Tin Can Bay about 40 kms away this really is a great place to set up camp.

We pulled into the exact spot under the same tree as last year and after a few minutes we heard a voice say “It’s the bloody Pommy chuck farmers again”. It was such a nice surprise to bump into someone from last year. These Aussie campers all have some serious camping gear. Perhaps they feel sorry for us in our little camper van but they do go out of their way to make us feel more than welcome. Happy hour around here starts at 4pm and finishes ?????
