Mekong Delta

The Mekong Delta is the rice bowl of Vietnam – a landscape of different greens and also a world where boats, houses, restaurants and even markets float on the river.

We were up early for a long bus ride to My Tho first fighting our way through the crowded streets of Saigon and then onto the freeway (very American). My Tho is the gateway to the Mekong Delta and it’s where boats can be picked up to visit this floating region. There are 4 main islands off My Tho and first we went close to Phoenix Island where we could see the houses right down the waters edge. It’s quite common to keep fish in water tanks under the house to keep fish that have been caught to wait to be eaten or sold. We then visited Dragon Island to see some of the agriculture of the region. Water coconuts are used extensively to make sweets. The juice is used to drink and the husks for fires. Honey is also a major form of income as well as tropical fruits such as mangoes, dragon fruit and lychees.

We transferred to some small rowing boats that took us to another part of the island. From there we transferred to small motor boats and we were taken up a very small tributary to a restaurant where we ate the local elephant ear fish, spring rolls, soup, fresh prawns, chicken and a vegetable called morning glory – all in a lovely outside setting with locals playing music and singing for us.

On the way back to the main boat the rains came – it is still the wet season. Monsoon like rain but quite welcome after the sticky heat of the day. It made the trip back to our departure point all the more interesting.

To see the thousands of bike riders on our way back to Saigon all with their different coloured rain gear flapping in the wind was quite a spectacle.
