The Perfect Wave

On our travels round Australia we have covered roughly 40,000 kms to date and in that time have found some fabulous camping spots and it has to be said some not too fabulous ones too.. Like a surfer who is always trying to find that perfect wave we too are always looking for that campsite that is one better but today perhaps we found our “perfect wave”.

Still heading steadily north and now in the North Burnett region, a naturally beautiful area based on it’s agricultural economy of citrus fruits, dairying and some of the best bull studs in the country. We stopped at the little town of Eidvold, its name taken from Norway where the first settler came from in 1848. In its heyday it was a bustling goldmining town boasting 15 hotels but now it’s just a very attractive sleepy country town.

We were pointed in the direction of Wurumu Dam some 40km out of town and then another 10km down a gravel track. The dam, is 68km round and has a small inlet at one end with free camping in the trees on the foreshore. We camped right at the waters edge. Cattle grazed between the few of us who were there. The wildlife was abundant. We were befriended by a one eyed kookaburra (strange but true). Yabbies (small freshwater lobster) were being caught just a few metres from the shore, a couple of pelicans floated serenely by, turtles came and sunbathed on the rocks in front of us and even a couple of kangaroos hopped by just to give it that real Aussie flavour. It was a baking hot afternoon but we had good shade. The evening and sunset which come very early here were just perfect. The pink, red and blue reflected on the still lake and there was huge bird noise as they fought for their spot in the trees for the night. And then, just perfect inky black stillness. Not even a ripple on the water. Today we found our perfect wave and vowed to stop looking for anything better! It’s been a long journey.
