Hobart

The most southerly of Australia’s capital cities and boasting the second deepest harbour in the world, Hobart sits amongst the foothills of Mount Wellington. It combines a modern lifestyle in a setting of excptional beauty. No wonder the Lonely Planet voted this place 7th out of the top ten cities to visit in the world today. Hobart became a major world port on the back of whaling and gold. It’s now an Antarctic gateway and home to both the Australian and French Antarctic programmes. It’s also big on the arts with the oldest theatre in Australia and MONA (museum of old and new art – more of this later). It is also internationaly famous amongst the yachting fraternity as the finish of the Sydney to Hobart yacht race.

So often when we visit places it appears to be sods law that some major event has just happened or is going to happen when we have left but this weekend in Hobart was a big one. It was the regatta bank holiday and the biennial wooden boat festival was on plus the usual Saturday Salamanca Market that Hobart is renowned for.

We took the unusual step of booking a campsite a few days in advance which was just a bus ride from the harbour where the main events were on side by side. We arrived early at Salamanca Market where stallholders from all over Tasmania bring stuff. Every food stall imaginable and all the other crafts etc. plus street music. The place was rammed and it was hot at 33 degrees. That’s a hot one down here.

Further along the quay the wooden boat festival was a real spectacle. Hundreds of boats from tiny wooden rowing boats up to huge 60 foot smacks were moored up all flying colourful bunting. More food, more music and stalls selling all manner of nautical wares.

We walked miles that day and wearily made our way back to Geoffrey by bus at the end of the day.
