On the 25th January 1788 the naval flagship HMS Sirius captained by Arthur Philip with a fleet of eleven ships entered Sydney harbour and anchored in Sydney Cove not far from the Sydney Harbour Bridge to start the first colony. Philip’s first dispatch to England from the colony in May 1788 read “We had the satisfaction of finding the finest harbour in the world in which a thousand sail of the line may ride in the most perfect security”. Today Sydney Harbour is still probably one of the finest and most recognisable in the world.

There is just nothing not to like about Sydney, instantly recognised by the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House and the many ferries that buzz about between the various bays. There is great shopping, fabulous restaurants and it is a place where a pair of shorts and a suit go side by side.

We spent most of our first day wandering around the Rocks area and shopping. An absolute must is the Bridge Climb. Expensive but the experience and views are unrivalled. Later we ate outside at the Opera Bar along with hundreds of others. Great atmosphere, great food and a live bluegrass band playing. All this with a backdrop of the Opera House and the bridge lit up made for a fantastic first evening in Sydney.

The second day we spent catching ferries – first to Watsons Bay which is a lovely sandy cove with Doyles fish and chips that are reputedly the best in the area and then on to Manly, a young surfers paradise where we lunched on fresh calamari, oysters and Prosecco to start Lynne’s ‘special’ birthday celebrations. Later we had been invited to Australian friends Antony and Judi for dinner – more oysters, fantastic fresh fish and champagne (and a yummy birthday cake).

Tomorrow sees a long train journey to see Geoffrey the campervan.
