Arno Bay

On the way down the Eyre Peninsula to our destination Arno Bay we stopped at Cowell, a lovely looking little town on the coast and they were selling fresh oysters on the quay so a good start. The public hall also houses an excellent art gallery consisting of art by very talented locals. Next door in the public toilet is another impressive art collection called 'Crap Art'. If any of the artwork is stolen the artists feel proud that their work has been deemed good enough to be taken. Arno Bay is the usual collection of tin shacks and houses on the beach and also has the usual jetty, now used for fishing but so important to the early settlers for getting their produce of mainly wool and grain sent to larger markets.

The campsite is run by a young couple who put so much effort in. Grass pitches under shady trees, local produce for sale in the reception at reasonable prices and some sort of entertainment in the camp kitchen a couple of times a week. There is also a great boardwalk that goes for several kilometres through mangrove swamps with information boards along the way. We spent three days in Arno Bay driving out to look at other bays along the coast. We then moved on to Gibbon Point where we wild camped on the beach right where some sealions live. This for us is Australia at its best. A lovely point miles from anywhere and your own secluded beach. Walking down the beach we came across a huge sealion just laying at the waters edge. He didn't seem to take too much notice of us. After a few minutes his mate turned up and just stayed about 10 metres offshore keeping an eye us.
