Boulia

A great drive today. Single track roads and nearly 400kms before any fuel. Great scenery, live kangaroos (as well as dead ones), several emus and cattle to dodge around. The approximate half way point is the Middleton Hotel (hotel being a bit of poetic licence). It is one of the most isolated hotels in Australia and is an absolute must to visit. It really is several days drive from any other meaningful place. It was originally one of the 9 changing stations for horses on the Cobb and Co. mail route between Winton and Boulia. Cobb and Co. were committed to getting the mail through on time, often contending with adverse weather conditions of drought and flood. We popped in for a drink but had a lunch of pie and chips just to support a great outback establishment. These stations were established every 15 to 30 miles so that they could change and rest horses. We had a severe storm in the afternoon with dramatic lightning strikes and rain that slowed us to a crawl. Just a reminder of how easy it is to get caught out in these remote places. Our single track road soon turned into a river. We heard later that the road out of Boulia had been closed due to flooding.

We stayed on a good little campsite in Boulia, very green with good shade but we are now starting to pay the price for good outback camping. Boulia is like so many small outback towns in that there is not really much there but surprisingly you suddenly come across a sports centre, a modern glass and chrome structure with swimming pool and tennis courts that would be the envy of many towns.

Most small communities have something for the tourists and in the case of Boulia it is the Min Min Lights. Apparently a hundred and odd years ago an old drover saw an eery light that followed him and over the years many others have reported this strange phenomomen - well, I suppose we have got the Loch Ness Monster!
