Tenant Creek to Alice Springs

Tenant Creek, a real Australian town that spreads endlessly down the main highway and comes with quite a large Aboriginal population. We popped into the local IGA store for a few bits and pieces. What a fabulous supermarket. It just didn't seem to fit in with the surroundings. When we then went into the hardware shop we were warned not to leave anything unattended. In fact the actual comment was that 'they will take your table while you are eating your breakfast off it'. It just about says it all really.

Next day we carried on down the never ending Stuart Highway. Originally, in the early part of the 20th century it was a dirt track built to support the telegraph line that linked Adelaide to Darwin. There were repeater stations at regular intervals. How communication has changed. The road was roughly sealed during the war years to get troups and provisions to the north where an attack was expected. It wasn't until the 70's that it was improved to it's present standard. We stopped at a few points of interest. First up was the Devil's Marbles, actually quite impressive. Huge lumps of stone piled high by nature. We then took a 22km detour off the highway to an Aboriginal settlement called Ali-Curung to look for an advertised art gallery. Sadly the gallery was closed. We got slightly lost in the labyrinth of tracks and roads. Despite the strict alcohol restrictions there were thousands of beer cans and bottles lying around complete with wrecked cars, children's toys etc. You really would have to see it to believe it. It is nothing to do with us but it is easy to see why Aboriginals divide opinion.

We passed over the Tropic of Capricorn a few kilometres before Alice Springs. Another photo opportunity not to be missed.
