Wilcannia

After a couple of nights at Broken Hill visiting some of the places we've been to before, in particular Silverton, a great little town where the Mad Max films were shot we decided to drive the 120kms to the Merrindi Lakes. There was great camping on the lake and our plan had been to take a short cut through to our next destination, Wilcannia. However, we were advised against this as the road was in such poor condition so it was 120kms back to Broken Hill and then another 198kms to Wilcannia.

Wilcannia is not know as the best place for a stopover with a high crime rate and plenty of boarded up shops but the good old Wikicamps app came up trumps again. This campsite finder app has been invaluable this year. This time it has come up with a campsite a few kilometres out of town and what a place. It is part of a large farm station with showers and toilets you would expect to find in a 5 star hotel, elevated grass pitches with great views over the billabong, loads of wildlife and the best camp kitchen we've ever come across, again with views to die for over the billabong. We went for a walk round and there were hundreds of pelicans flying in to roost for the evening. This is another example of why we like about travelling in a campervan. Sometimes you can be very pleasantly surprised when you least expect it.
